£29,000 income threshold Initial grant: 2.5 years Pathway to ILR & citizenship

What is a UK Spouse Visa?

Also called the Marriage Visa, it allows the husband, wife or partner of a British citizen or a person settled in the UK (e.g. ILR) to live and work here. It’s usually granted for 2.5 years, extendable, leading to Indefinite Leave to Remain and then British citizenship.

Who it’s for

Partners of UK citizens or settled persons (including civil partners and some unmarried partners) where the relationship is genuine and you’ve met in person.

How it progresses

Initial grant of 30 months → extension for a further 30 months → apply for ILR after 5 years in the 5-year route (subject to suitability and requirements).

Eligibility requirements

You and your partner must meet the UK rules on relationship, finances, English language and accommodation.

Relationship

Legally married or in a civil partnership, or qualifying durable partners. The relationship must be genuine and subsisting and you must have met in person.

Financial

The sponsoring partner (or combined income) must usually meet a minimum gross income of £29,000. Income can include employment, self-employment, savings and certain other sources.

Threshold does not rise for children

English language

Applicant must meet the English requirement via an approved test (or exemption), or through recognised academic qualifications or nationality.

Accommodation

There must be suitable accommodation in the UK for you, your partner and any dependants, without recourse to public funds.
